Superyachts

The winter destination of the Caribbean has been the typical default choice for super yacht owners for many years now. But for those wishing to venture further afield to destinations such as the Maldives, or Seychelles, or just to explore the many alternative destinations on offer throughout the Indian Ocean, the threat of piracy can be a prohibiting factor.

Superyachts visiting a destination for recreational purposes require a different approach in security planning. It can be divided into transiting high risk waters, using the same defence methods employed on commercial shipping and that of a more robust security plan when visiting remote locations or even ports and harbours.

Superyacht ship security plans although comprehensive do not often go into the detail necessary to repel armed attackers. Nor would they necessarily have maritime specialists with the correct defensive equipment along with the knowledge of pirate tactics and up to date intelligence. Interception while on passage along with kidnapping attempted while in port or at anchor are the two main areas of risk. And for this, appropriate security plans to mitigate this risk need to be employed.
